Error IO231 is raised when posting a goods movement

 

Symptom

  • When trying to post a goods movement for a material number assigned to a serial number profile, error message 'IO 231 - Stock data of serial number &1 not suitable for movement' is raised. It is not possible to post the goods movement.
  • Checking the serial number master data in IQ03 or IQ09 transaction, you will see that serial number stock data does not match with the stock information data.

  • Materials Management (MM)
  • SAP ERP Central Component
  • SAP ERP
  • SAP enhancement package for SAP ERP
  • SAP enhancement package for SAP ERP, version for SAP HANA
  • SAP S/4HANA

Reproducing the Issue

  1. Go to MIGO transaction.
  2. Select a Goods Issue option and movement type.
  3. Insert material, quantity, plant, storage location and serial number.
  4. Set item as 'OK'.
  5. Click on post button.

Error message 'IO 231 - Stock data of serial number &1 not suitable for movement' is raised.

Cause

Serial number stock data don't fit to the stock data of MM Inventory Management.

Resolution

Please follow the instructions of SAP note 612132.

In nutshell, you have to:

  1. Create a physical inventory in MI01 transaction;
  2. Enter a counted quantity in MI04 transaction;
  3. Define each serial number to each qty on stock.
  4. Post inventory differences in MI07 transaction.
